United Airlines slashes Adelaide 2026/27 seasonal flights

United Airlines is trimming its 2026/27 southern summer seasonal flights to Adelaide (ADL) by more than 50%, according to its latest schedule update.

As reported by AeroRoutes, the three-times-weekly B787-9 round-trip service between San Francisco (SFO) and Adelaide was originally scheduled to operate between December 3, 2026, and March 25, 2027, for a total of 49 return flights.

However, United will now operate the service only between December 17, 2026, and February 8, 2027, reducing the schedule to 23 return flights – a 53.1% cut.

United Airlines launched its seasonal Adelaide service in December 2025 with the support of the South Australian Government. The flights attracted considerable attention as they were the first non-stop services between the South Australian capital and the United States.

At the time, United Airlines SVP of Network Planning and Alliances Patrick Quayle described the route as “an exciting step for United and for travellers on both sides of the Pacific.”

“This new route is about connecting people to places they want to go,” he said.

"We regularly make changes to our schedule due to aircraft availability, market dynamics and other factors," a United spokesperson told Aero South Pacific about the service cuts.

Light loads on last summer's flights

Australian Government data is not yet available for the full duration of United’s inaugural Adelaide season, which ran until the end of March 2026. Currently, statistics are available only through February 28, 2026.

But between December 13, 2025, and February 28, 2026, United operated 35 B787-9 return flights between San Francisco and Adelaide Airport, carrying 8,431 passengers and 366.6 tonnes of freight.

United operates two different cabin configurations across its B787-9 fleet. The airline deployed the 257-seat version on the Adelaide route, providing 17,990 seats on the city pair through to the end of February and recording an average passenger load factor of 46.9%.

Passenger load factors are not a reliable measure of route profitability, particularly as the Adelaide service received government support. However, they do provide an indication of passenger demand.

United Airlines recommitted to operating the Adelaide route during the 2026/27 southern summer shortly after completing its 2025/26 season. The airline remains the largest carrier flying between Australia and the United States.
