MAF Cessna 172 makes precautionary landing on Queensland road
An MAF International Cessna 172 made a forced landing on a remote Queensland road after experiencing engine problems during an August 16 training flight from Winton to Mareeba. The single engine aircraft landed safety at about 1.00pm (local time) on the Kennedy Development Road around 22 kilometres south of Lyndhurst.

AUGUST 17, 2026: The Queensland Government has commenced construction of a dual-purpose emergency airstrip on the Burke Developmental Road at Dunbar in the state’s Gulf region. The facility will operate as part of the road network during normal conditions and function as an emergency aircraft landing strip when required.

AUGUST 17, 2026: The Fiji Parliament will debate a proposed FJD200 million (USD89.5 million) loan to Fiji Airways, today, August 17, 2026. The Parliament’s Order Paper puts Fiji Airways at the top of the list, ahead of 14 other matters. In addition to the loan, the government plans to exempt Fiji Airways from paying a guarantee fee and guarantee the specified borrowing facilities until their full maturity or discharge.

AUGUST 10, 2026: The New Zealand Government says the creation of a new Civil Aviation Rule will cut red tape for regional airports by creating more flexible, cost-effective options to improve runway safety. Among the changes are shorter runway end safety area (RESA) lengths for smaller airports and streamlining the approvals process for proposed RESA lengths.

WA Police Air Wing adds Pilatus PC-24 business jet
The Western Australia Police Force Air Wing has taken delivery of a new Pilatus PC-24 business jet, giving the agency the ability to rapidly deploy personnel and equipment across the 2.5 million square kilometre state. The aircraft is expected to enter operational service in the coming weeks.

Government restarts Loyalty Islands airport blockade talks
New Caledonia's new President has travelled to the Loyalty Islands in a bid to end airport blockades that have disrupted Air Calédonie services for months. While both sides agreed to continue talks, protesters remain opposed to the airline's relocation from Nouméa's Magenta Airport.
August 2026 Aircraft Movements
AUGUST 17, 2026: A retired QantasLink F100 is ferrying to Wollongong (WOL) from Perth (PER) via Kalgoorlie (KGI). The Qantas Group has donated the aircraft, VH-NPU (msn 11502), to the HARS Museum. It will arrive in Wollongong in the afternoon of August 17. VH-NPU ended revenue flights in July.
AUGUST 11, 2026: National Jet Express is preparing to ferry its ninth E190-100 to Australia. The aircraft, N110BZ (msn 19000075) was recently repainted in National Jet Express colours and at the time of publication, is at Miami (OPF). It will be entered into the Australian aircraft register as VH-8EC.
AUGUST 10, 2026: PNG Air is ferrying in its fourth ATR42-600. At the time of publication, the aircraft, P2-ATQ (msn 1219) is at Muscat (MCT) enroute to Port Moresby (POM), having flown from Toulouse (QLF) via Malta (MLA) and Jeddah (JED).
AUGUST 10, 2026: New Zealand’s Glenorchy Air has taken delivery of its first Tecnam P2012 after a marathon ferry flight Capua (QIJ) to Auckland (AKL) via Rome (QUI), Lille (LIL), Paris (BVA), Reykjavik (RKV), Goose Bay (YYR), Quebec (YQB), St. Catharines (YCM), Buffalo (BUF), Houghton Lake (HTL), Hollister (HLI), Kona (KOA), and Pago Pago (PPG). After receiving its local certification, the aircraft, T7-NZL (msn 091) will be registered as ZK-JTK.
AUGUST 6, 2026: Air Tahiti will soon ferry its newest ATR72 600 to Papeete (PPT). The aircraft, F OPFO (msn 1821), remains in Toulouse (TLS) at the time of publication but is expected to depart within days. It will become the airline’s eleventh ATR72-600.
AUGUST 6, 2026: Virgin Australia will begin ferrying its newest B737-8 to Australia today. The aircraft, VH-8IO (msn 67046), is expected to leave Melbourne (MLB) on August 6, bound for Brisbane (BNE) via Ontario (ONT) and Kona (KOA). It will become the airline’s twenty third MAX 8.
AUGUST 5, 2026: Link Airways has leased a Saab 340B from Aviation Inventory Resources. The 28.5-year-old aircraft first flew for Mesaba Airlines and was recently entered into the Australian aircraft register as VH-VEJ (msn 435).
AUGUST 3, 2026: Virgin Australia has ferried its twenty-second B737-8 to Australia. The aircraft, VH-8IM (msn 67045) flew from Melbourne (MLB) to Brisbane (BNE) via Ontario (ONT) and Kona (KOA) late last week, landing in Australia on July 30.
AUGUST 3, 2026: Air Marshall Islands has taken delivery of its second Cessna 408 SkyCourier. The aircraft, V7-2614 (msn 0066) ferried from Las Vegas (VGT) to Majuro (MAJ) via Santa Maria (SMX) and Honolulu (HNL) over the period July 25 – 31.)

Alliance Airlines clarifies Qantas deal after ASX trading halt
Alliance Airlines has clarified its revised Qantas wet-lease agreement after an ASX query triggered a trading halt. The airline says the deal, together with organisational changes, is expected to significantly improve profitability and has forecast stronger earnings for FY2027.

AUGUST 17, 2026: Jetstar is axing its daily Brisbane (BNE) – Mackay (MKY) round-trips, effective October 23, 2026. The airline says rising operating costs have rendered the route commercially unviable.
AUGUST 13, 2026: Air India will increase its weekly B787-8 operated Delhi (DEL) – Melbourne (MEL) round-trips from seven to eleven, effective October 25.
AUGUST 13, 2026: Air India will deploy the B777-300ER on its daily Delhi (DEL) – Sydney (SYD) round-trips from January 1, 2027, and on selected frequencies during December 2026. The B777 replaces the B787-8.
AUGUST 11, 2026: VietJet Air will begin twice-weekly A330-300-operated Ho Chi Minh (SGN) – Western Sydney (WSI) round-trips on January 10, 2027, scaling up to thrice-weeky round-trips in March.
AUGUST 11, 2026: Thai VietJet Air will begin four times-weekly Bangkok (BKK) – Western Sydney (WSI) round-trips in November 2027. The operating aircraft and precise start date is to be confirmed.
AUGUST 11, 2026: Qantas has dferred the start of A321-200XLR operations on the Brisbane (BNE) – Manila (MNL) city-pair until February 1, 2027, rather than October 25, 2026, as previously announced. Frequency increases from five to seven weekly round-trips will occur as previously scheduled on November 23.
AUGUST 11, 2026: Shenzhen Airlines will operate five weekly round-trips on the Shenzhen (SZX) – Melbourne (MEL) city-pair between October 25, 2026, and March 27, 2027. The airline had planned to operate three A330-300 round-trips each week over the period.
AUGUST 4, 2026: Fiji Airways plans to start thrice-weekly B737-8 operated Nadi (NAN) – Western Sydney (WSI) round-trips, effective June 7, 2027.
AUGUST 4, 2026: Turkish Airlines will start using Singapore (SIN) rather than Kuala Lumpur (KUL) as its stopover port for its A350-900 operated Istanbul (IST) – Sydney (SYD), effective October 26, 2026.
AUGUST 3, 2026: Fiji Airways will deploy its A350-900s on the Nadi (NAN) – Vancouver (YVR) city-pair from September 8, 2026, rather than October 1 as previously announced.
AUGUST 3, 2026: Jeju Air will extend its Seoul (ICN) – Saipan (SPN) round-trips through the winter season into March 2027, according to the Marianas Visitors Authority.

Niugini Aviation P-750 XSTOL tyre bursts at Goroka Airport
A Niugini Aviation P-750 XSTOL burst a landing gear tyre while landing at Goroka Airport last week, resulting in a runway closure and a PNG Air flight diversion. However, the aircraft was recovered swiftly and resumed flying within 48 hours.

Gold Coast drives Queensland Airports’ FY26 passenger growth
Queensland Airports Limited has reported 6.2% passenger growth to 8.4 million travellers in the year to June 30, 2026, more than double the national average. Strong demand at Coolangatta Gold Coast Airport drove the increase, while Townsville also recorded solid gains.
