Work starts on upgrade of Fiji’s Nausori Airport

Workers have broken ground on a FJD64 million (USD29.2 million) upgrade of Suva’s Nausori Airport (SUV). The project at Fiji’s second-busiest airport includes a runway upgrade and the construction of a new passenger terminal.

The airport handles around 400,000 passengers annually and is served by Fiji Airways and Nauru Airlines. The ground-breaking ceremony took place on April 30.

Upgrading and strengthening the 2,148-metre asphalt runway will enable it to accommodate fully-loaded B737 and A320 aircraft.

Minister for Public Enterprises Charan Jeath Singh said the new terminal would transform the airport into a modern, efficient and passenger-focused facility.

“It will deliver expanded departure and arrival areas, modern check-in and security facilities, improved baggage handling systems, and comfortable, air-conditioned passenger spaces,” his ministry said in a social media post.

“By investing in this redevelopment, we are strengthening connectivity across Fiji and the Pacific, supporting tourism growth and business development, creating employment opportunities, and positioning Nausori Airport as a modern and efficient second international gateway.”

The project forms part of a 10-year Fiji Airports master plan, which includes potential commercial developments, new taxiways, and the future construction of an international terminal wing.

The Fijian Government says it is investing over FJD2 billion (USD910 million) to improve aviation infrastructure across the country over the next decade. The investment is aimed at maintaining inter-island connectivity and attracting international tourists.

Fiji welcomed almost one million tourists in 2025, with most passing through Nadi Airport (NAN).

In contrast, Nausori Airport primarily serves domestic travellers and plays an important role supporting Suva, government operations, businesses and regional organisations. Passenger numbers are expected to continue rising.

Fiji Airports chief executive Mesake Nawari said the upgrade would improve everyday travel for local residents and help “push the tourism dollar out to the rest of Fiji”.

“It has been more than six decades since a major redevelopment of (Nausori’s) airport building, making this a significant milestone for us,” he said.

The Nausori Airport upgrade is expected to take at least 18 months.
