An A330-900 unexpectedly going out-of-service is seriously disrupting Aircalin’s schedules, resulting in flight cancellations, rescheduling, and the airline calling in other operators to help.
Aircalin grounded one of its two A330-900s, F-ONET (msn 1938), on March 31, 2026, following a technical issue with the aircraft. Aircalin uses the two A330s on routes to Paris (CDG) via Bangkok (BKK), Singapore (SIN), and Sydney (SYD).
The airline hasn’t publicly said what the precise problem is, but it does involve a part.
“The part required to return the aircraft to service has been identified at Airbus's facilities in Toulouse, and its delivery to New Caledonia is currently underway,” a statement on Aircalin’s website reads.
Aircalin cancels, reschedules A330 flights
In the immediate aftermath of the grounding, Aircalin cancelled several services, including at least one departure from Paris.
“Aircalin is adjusting its flights and doing everything possible to ensure the continuity of its operations,” the statement adds.
An April 7 scheduled Nouméa – Singapore – Nouméa round-trip is now rescheduled to April 9. It was a similar scenario with the airline’s scheduled Nouméa – Sydney – Nouméa round-trip yesterday. It is now due to operate on April 9.
Today’s Nouméa – Bangkok – Paris and Paris – Bangkok – Nouméa flights are also rescheduled to tomorrow.
Other routes are experiencing same day timetable changes. The disruptions underscore the difficulties small carriers face when an aircraft unexpectedly goes out of service. Aircalin’s fleet includes the two A330-900s and two A320-200s.
“Our airline is facing an exceptional situation in a particularly challenging global context,” the statement continues. “
“In parallel, we have approached all of our airline partners to source a replacement aircraft. Here again, the international aviation landscape is currently extremely strained, availability is virtually non-existent worldwide, and our own remaining aircraft are fully committed to our scheduled services.”
However, Aircalin has enlisted Air Tahiti Nui to operate its scheduled Nouméa – Papeete (PPT) – Nouméa rotation on April 10. Like Aircalin, Air Tahiti Nui is a small airline with just four aircraft. In its case, four B787-9s.
Difficult time for Aircalin
The A330’s grounding comes at a difficult time. New Caledonia is heavily tourism dependent, and it is school holiday time in Australia, one of its key markets.
Meanwhile, Air Calédonie, Aircalin’s sibling domestic operator, is operating a threadbare schedule to Ile de Pins (ILP) and Port Vila (VLI) and is filing for insolvency after a month long blockade of four domestic airports in March crippled the carrier.
Recently, Aircalin said it would no longer sell onward domestic connections on Air Calédonie flights because of the ongoing uncertainty around the airline.
