First Details of Air Niugini A220-300 Flights

Air Niugini will start scheduled A220 flights on October 4, 2025 with a round-trip between Port Moresby (POM) and Lae (LAE) followed by a Port Moresby – Kavieng (KVG) – Momote (MAS) – Port Moresby rotation later that day.

Earlier this month, Air Niugini took delivery of its first A220-300. The airline has since operated a series of training flights. Now, schedule filings show Air Niugini intends to put the plane into revenue service on the first weekend in October.

Over the A220's first week of operations, Aero South Pacific research reveals that Air Niugini plans to operate 12 round-trips on the Port Moresby – Lae city pair and five round-trips on the Port Moresby -  Momote (Manus Island) city pair. Air Niugini has another ten A220s on order, including two A220-300s that it expects delivery of later this year, and eight slightly smaller A220-100s. The A220-300s are leased from Azorra and the A220-100s are sourced directly from Airbus. They will progressively replace Air Niugini’s Fokker jets and also take over some frequencies operated by B737-800s.

The airline says the A220 jets will offer Papua New Guineans a "new era of travel." Compared to the aging Fokker jets and the B737-800s, the A220s have quieter engines, more spacious cabins, and improved technology. "With lower fuel consumption and greater operational efficiency, (the A220 will reduce costs while providing passengers with a safer, more comfortable, and reliable flying experience," reads a recent Air Niugini press release. "Its range also allows Air Niugini to strengthen domestic connectivity and expand regional links across the Pacific and Asia."

As more of the regional jets are delivered, Air Niugini expects to progressively roll out more A220-operated flights.
