Qantas and Hawaiian Airlines File Codesharing Application

Qantas and Hawaiian Airlines have applied to the US Department of Transportation for blanket statements of authorisation to engage in reciprocal codesharing. The filing was dated February 28, 2025.

In September 2024, Alaska Airlines completed its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines. Qantas and Alaska Airlines have a longstanding codeshare agreement. Until now, Virgin Australia has acted as Hawaiian's Australian codeshare partner. That arrangement will soon end.

Under the amended codeshare agreement, Hawaiian's HA code will be displayed on flights operated by Qantas within Australia, between Australia and New Zealand, and between Australia/New Zealand and the US.

The Qantas QF code will be displayed on flights operated by Hawaiian between points in the US.

Additionally, Hawaiian Airlines has requested a blanket statement of authorisation to display the Qantas QF code on flights operated by Hawaiian from points behind the US via the US and intermediate points to a point or points in Australia and beyond.

Qantas is also requesting a blanket statement of authorisation to display the Hawaiian HA code on flights operated by Qantas from points behind Australia via Australia and intermediate points to a point or points in the United States and beyond.

Qantas and Hawaiian Airlines say the proposed codeshare services are consistent with the Air Transport Agreement between the US and Australia. They say granting the application is in the public interest because it will benefit consumers by providing additional travel options between the United States and Australia.

The two airlines also say that the proposed conduct is consistent with authority the department has previously granted to other US carriers under the US – Australia open skies agreement.

The airlines have requested that the department grant approval indefinitely, consistent with Department of Transportation precedents.  Qantas and Hawaiian Airlines say they will start marketing these codeshare services as soon as they have received all necessary governmental approvals.
